Chapter Five

He’d left her that night after they’d made their supposed deal. Later, she’d seen that he’d spent the rest of the night in his study, most likely sleeplessly.

That was the last time he’d left her alone in his bed.

Other than the unique sexual arrangement, they resembled a married couple. They’d divided the chores. Since she was home, Avery cooked and tidied up. There was little of both to do. Logan had a regular cleaning service who came three times a week, and they both preferred takeout to home cooking, although Logan’s tastes were boringly healthy.

Avery might not have eaten healthily, but she got plenty of exercise. Logan was insatiable. Sex became a given after they woke up in the morning and as soon as he got home from work. It often took two or three tries to get to bed at night and still they woke each other up to fuck. Sometimes it was Logan who urgently took her into his arms with almost violent need, and sometimes it was Avery to coax and caress his sleeping penis until it grew stiff and insistent enough to wake him. He never complained and neither did she. Sex anytime, all the time—that was the unspoken house rule.

She was addicted to his body, to his cock and to his controlled aggression. He was the best lover she’d ever had—the sexiest, the most intuitive, the most indefatigable. His stamina was almost inhuman.

Most days, Avery sat at the kitchen counter with Logan’s laptop open in front of her. She checked her email hourly, but there was still no response from Drew—no formal response, at least, like he’d promised. No voicemails or letters, either, so there was nothing to prove how ballistic he’d gone after the email she’d sent.

It had been almost two weeks now, and she still had no bank account and no possessions. Worse, she couldn’t get a reference for her job hunt since Drew had been her last employer. She’d called her previous employer, but the small gallery had gone out of business and she couldn’t track down the owners, who’d apparently traveled abroad. So, she was left with a gaping hole in the résumé that she sent out faithfully every day to every kind of job she could find. She hadn’t been called for a single interview. She counted it a good sign when she got a stiff form letter back in response to her application.

Jane had offered to get her a make-work job at the university, though she had phrased it in a much nicer way, almost as if Avery would be doing her a favor.

It would be nice to get out of the house.

How frustrating it was to not have enough cash for a daily cup of coffee.

She still had the remnants of her original
